Science Says You Need to Laugh More… And So Do I!

It’s hard to feel stressed when you’re laughing. But laughter can do a whole lot more for you than just stress relief — laughter can make you more productive.

Researchers have compared laughter to that of a “potent drug” with “contagious powers” and a lengthy list of benefits for both mind and body. Check out my favorite reasons laughter makes you more productive.

Laughter is an instant energy boost.

Give it a shot right now — try laughing or simply smiling, even if you have no “reason.” Sure, you might feel a bit silly in the moment, but you have to admit it lightened your mood, even if only for a moment.

Next time you’re in a funk or low on energy, let out a laugh or smile and get an instant boost of energy to get your day going and back on track!

Laughter makes you more creative.

Laughter is a great tool for defeating writer’s block. When the creative juices aren’t flowing, it’s easy to get frustrated or even angry with ourselves for not performing.

It helps break through the barrier of self-doubt and anxiety, leaving more room for creative thought.

Whenever you find yourself drawing a blank, struggling for the words, staring down a blank sheet of paper, take a quick break just to laugh! Look up a funny video, call up a friend, remember an inside joke — anything to give yourself a quick chuckle.

Laughter is a natural antidepressant.

Some days it’s hard just to accomplish anything meaningful. When the weight of the world feels heavy on your shoulders, you’re not your best self and certainly can’t create or produce to your fullest capacity.

Rather than resorting to medications, caffeine, sugar or other chemical stimulants, encourage a light-hearted moment into your day, where you’re free to laugh, smile and just let go.

Laughter brings people together.

Sharing a laugh is an instant bonding mechanism. Whether tensions are high in the office, you’re working with a new colleague or just feel disconnected from someone; laughter breaks through barriers or walls of tension.

A study by the American Scientist showed women laugh over 126% more than men. Come on guys, with all this evidence; you’ve got to step your game up! Ladies, keep up the good work!

Laughter is contagious.

Have you ever seen someone else laugh and without even knowing what they’re laughing about, you find yourself laughing along? Something is triggered in our brains when we see other people laugh, we want to get in on the fun.

Smiling, laughing, being a more open and enthusiastic person will attract the same type of people and opportunities your way. You’ll be amazed at who you meet and where those relationships will take you — personally and professionally.

Don’t underestimate laughter as a unique and compelling networking tool.

I’ve seen the power of laughter to inspire, motivate and bring people together at numerous Speaking engagements. There’s nothing I love more than getting a crowd excited about achieving their purpose and taking action in BIG ways!
