5 Ways to Nourish Your Mind

30 May, 2017 Books and Literature,Personal Development

What input is your brain receiving? Are the external stimuli, information and knowledge you filter through your mind, helping or harming you?

Let’s tune into the Mental spoke of the “Wheel of Life,” created by none other than Zig Ziglar, himself.

Why is mental awareness so important?

The way you think impacts the opinions you have of yourself; what you believe you can accomplish; the kind of person you are and how you conduct yourself in life, relationships and business.

For example, I know a man who had a total physical transformation. Through months of serious dedication, better nutrition and increased exercise, he lost a whopping 60 pounds!

He looks great and is in the best shape of his life! Yet, while his physical life changed, his mentality did not — he can’t see the progress he’s made or how much he’s achieved.

Regardless of how fantastic he looks or how much healthier he is, his mind is still telling himself he’s not good enough.

In short, he put in the work when it came to improving his physical well-being, but completely missed the mark on his mental state, and now he’s struggling to close the gap.

1. Surround Yourself with Positive Influence

We’ve all had friends, peers, colleagues or even family members, who didn’t serve us well in our lives.

Surround yourself with people who lift you up, inspire you and want only the best for you.

2. Say Your Affirmations

A positive affirmation is a short sentence or phrase affirming a state or sense of being you aspire to achieve. For example:

  • I am confident.
  • I am strong.
  • I am prepared.
  • I am capable.

Write down 2-3 affirmations then say them every morning or evening, as a way of reinforcing what you already have within you, but might need a little reminder of.

3. Keep Writing

As writers, the act of writing can be both a gift and a curse. When the words are flowing and natural, it’s a gift; when writer’s block strikes, it’s a curse.

It’s just as important to monitor what goes in your mind, as what comes out. If you’ve got some stored-up negativity lurking around in there, let it out.

4. Let Reading Inspire You

Writing and reading go hand in hand, like peanut butter and jelly. Some of my favorite authors are also some of my very best friends or people I’ve met through my “Book Bound” Workshop!

Switch up your reading now and then, by choosing a topic you wouldn’t normally read — doing so may offer a different perspective and propel you towards greater inspiration.

5. Turn off The Noise

It’s hard to avoid the going-ons of our world, but constantly being inundated by breaking news, disappointing headlines and current affairs, can certainly cast a dark shadow over the day.

Of course, it’s important to stay well-informed, but try to strike a balance, where you decidedly set aside time just to tune out and tune in to what’s going on in your own mind.
